The word kilim simply means a flat woven rug, or rug without a knotted pile. There are many variations used in different languages: gelim in Iran, kelim in Afghanistan, kylym in the Ukraine, palas in the Caucasus, bsath in Syria and Lebanon ,
chilim in Rumania and kilim again, in Turkey, Poland, Hungary and Serbia.
Moreover, flat weaving is found in some form all over the world, from the Great Plains of North America to Scandinavia and Indonesia. At times there is only a structural similarity in what is produced, but the disciplines imposed by the materials and techniques often result in strikingly similar designs and composition.
Kilim is a type of textile without a pile, that preceded the Carpet with a pile and it is mainly made by nomads. It has often got no back or front surface and it can be used on both sides.
Qashqai Carpets: Qashqai carpets are woven by nomads who live in the mountainous areas of Southwest Persia, the provinces of Fars, khuzestan, south of Isfahan and around the city shiraz.
Their carpets have a high knot density and a wide variety of designs, usually in deep red and blue colours. They weave carpets, Kilims and decorative textiles (ribbons, bags, etc.), which depict scenes from their lives with various representation of humans, animals, birds, trees and flowers.
They also depict historical monuments, mostly from Persepolis.
